This is part of a simple shaft loom that was made in the late eighteenth century in Southeastern Pennsylvania and used there for over two hundred years. The breast beam, also sometimes called a fore beam, is closest to the weaver. The newly completed cloth passes over the breast beam, then reverses direction and go down to be wound around the cloth beam.
